The Bay Area’s Nonprofit Jewish Funeral Home

Sinai Memorial has grown alongside the Bay Area Jewish community since the California Gold Rush. Founded in 1901 as the sacred burial community (Chevra Kadisha) of the Hebrew Benevolent Society, Sinai Memorial was the first Jewish funeral home in Northern California with expertise in centuries-old Jewish practices and rituals.

We remain Northern California’s only combined Chevra Kadisha and funeral home with multiple cemeteries.

Our Approach

Rooted in Jewish Values

Death, loss, and grief are profoundly challenging stages in our lives that every one of us will face. Jewish tradition and values offer a compassionate roadmap through these moments — from concrete steps that guide us forward to practices that support reflection, meaning, and care.
Respect for the Dead (Kvod HaMet)
We honor the deceased with intention and reverence through every act of service, ritual, and practice.
Care for the Mourner (Nichum Avelim)
We comfort mourners with warmth and sincerity throughout their grieving and healing process.
Our Foundation

Guided by Jewish Tradition

We honor Jewish traditions by upholding centuries-old practices while also embracing the needs of our diverse and evolving community.  Every individual and family holds different beliefs, values, and needs for their end-of-life journey. We are here to guide you through all your options.
Acts of Kindness (Chesed Shel Emet)
Our work is guided by kindness for the deceased, their mourners, and the Jewish community.
Jewish Ritual Care

We offer ritual cleansing (Taharah) and traditional shrouds or burial cloth (Tachrichim) at no charge, and spiritual guarding (Sh’mirah) for a modest fee.

Our Principles

Inspired by Jewish Wisdom

Jewish wisdom teaches us to move through life with humility, patience, and reverence for the natural world (Shmirat Ha’adamah) and each other. By gently facing our mortality and life’s hardest stages together, Sinai Memorial seeks to foster hope and healing for our community.

Connected to the Earth
We believe in our connection to the earth and offer green burials and environmentally responsible options in honor of this belief.
Connected to All Humanity
We believe in the need to care for one another, so we offer no cost or low cost burial services for those in exceptional financial circumstances.
Our Legacy

Committed to Community

A loss for anyone in the Jewish community is Sinai Memorial’s responsibility, regardless of the person, family, or chosen family’s denominations, traditions, and means. We connect with and hold our entire community through life’s stages of death and grief. Working alongside Jewish and secular funeral homes, organizations, rabbis, service leaders, and community members, Sinai Memorial makes each service, memorial, event, and program feel meaningful and inclusive.
Guided by Mutual Responsibility (Arevut)
We act as stewards of the Jewish community’s sacred duty to care for one another.
Grounded in Community (Kehillah)

We have a responsibility to serve and connect with the entire Jewish community.
